A Review: Split

Initially after seeing the first round of teaser trailers released of Split I thought to myself, “Oh, fu*k.”

M. Night Shyamalan is known for testing boundaries and experimenting with his writing, so seeing a trailer that answered absolutely no questions as to what the film would entail- was not surprising. The film stars a strong cast featuring James McAvoy, Anya Taylor- Joy, and Haley Lu Richardson. Anya Taylor- Joy is something of a breakout star having recently been seen in Barry the Netflix original, which she immediately gained my attention in.

James McAvoy has such a raw talent for connecting with any and every character he portrays, so taking on 23 at one time was a small feat for him. Each personality he portrays is so vividly real that you almost feel a loss whenever they lose the “light”. M. Night Shyamalan presents the psychology behind D.I.D in such a way that you never identify the “monster” as such.

The entanglement of suffering and human perseverance is beautifully illustrated in both McAvoy’s character as well as Joy’s. The idea that: human fault and suffering does not make one weak or a victim but rather something greater and special. The film itself is written in a way that you never can decide if it is a comedy/thriller/scifi which in itself contributes to how universal it can be received. You leave the film asking yourself “How much am I capable of?”.
